I might be mistaken, but I think you can also set up keys to target the numbers.
Sometime you can just memorize what number was a monk that cast Mark of protection and switch targets and come right back at him. With voice come it shouldnt be too hard say " Switch to 5!!" instead of looking for him and calling him on target.
My one thing in CA is the most simple one of them all, attacking targets. Simply press T then space bar or whatever skill you want. I cant tell how many times I'm calling the monk/mesmer/necro just to find the ranger is attacking another ele and the warrior is going toe to toe with another warrior.

Target call helps in CA for sure.

I've been once in a good team where nobody died on either side, but there was no focus.

Currently with my monk I'm struggling with
1- interrupt mesmer
2- energy burn / shame / mind wrack / etc mesmer

Energy burn mesmer is even worse than the interrupt one.

And all the while... the team is taking on the warrior or ranger .. or whatnot, then rezzing me, and the Mesmer just prances around throwing her energy shutdown spells and eating candies.

monks are suppose to have a hard time with mesmers. that's their specialty like no other class.

as a monk i prefer mesmers over rangers. rangers are very fun in CA. my personal favorate is cripple shot + apply. you can interrupt all day and really hinder the entire team. that many conditions will stress a monk hard to remove. btw its stacks cripple>poison. removal snags the poison then attack again.

cannot stress res sig enough for sure.

just keep in mind its completely random. you might get a good team and you might get a bad. in the end most teams are bad. if you get 4 w/r with axes you will have a good day.

Just to let you know I am a PVP noob a lvl 20 W/Mo with no PVP under my belt mainly because military life makes it difficult to play the game much. But anyway this guide is very helpfull. I appreciate all of your time that you have taken to help those of us that are unable to do this.

Nice guide. After reading it i just felt like trying PvP for the first time. So i went in Lion's Arch arena. Which didn't turn out too well.

I kinda knew PvP wasn't my place and i confirmed it hehe. I never died that fast. I didn't had the time to target anyone that i was already dead.

Well, This is a good guide that all PvP newb like me should read before entering arena. The team i was in didn't do anything listed in here and were insulting each other as soon as we entered the map...

At least this guide finally made me try PvP.

Thanks

Default hey guys, the ideas behind this thread are GREAT!

My only problem is that they don't really provide any concrete problem solvers for newbs... and before i begin i'd like to classify newbs.
To begin, there are two types of new gamer
(1) noobs , and
(2) newbs

(1) the noob, the new to the world gamer that thinks he/she knows everything about everything... won't listen to people trying to help them and utterly impatient to the core.. as well usually between the ages of 6-16.

(2) the newb... the person who is generally patient, new to world but somehow gets labelled as a noob and laughed at when just entering an arena... but is someone who wants to learn...
(if you are the above "newb" plz continue reading...) if # 1 plz insert genitals in mouth and bite really really hard so as to not contaminate the gene pool ty....

I remember people screaming noob at me and laughing when I showed up with my E/N... Which needless to say is very discouraging...
It's sad because pretty much everyone starts out the same way....

Ok, now to my point... the advice that is being offered in here... isn't aimed at a newb... its aimed at ppl who have never PvP'd... because if u PvP like 2-3 times most of these questions will answer themselves...
I find however that there is a definate learning curve in the PvP world...
If an experienced player takes 30 min to explain stuff to a newb, it pays off exponentionally...

My advice to newbs is to of course play PvP.. the more you play the more you learn,
-use a build a few times b4 you decide what to change... "u might have had a bad round"
-Most importantly, watch people you think did really well, add them to your friends list, "don't spam them" but ask them if they has a minute to help you...
9/10 times they cherish the fact that atleast they're helping to illimate the steady flow of newbs that are gettin involved...

Im not saying its the cure all, you still should get VENT, or T/S...
www.ventrillo.com - download the client
search teamspeak in google...

they are communications tools, that allow you to speak to other players in real time... "for those of you who are new to online gaming on ur computer"
and they are essential if you ever want to win consistently in HoH...

good luck

1. soft targets 1st - if I had a dollar for every time I have watched some warrior try to go head-to-head with another warrior while letting a monk/mesmer/ele/necro live I would live in Redmond, WA and be named Bill

2. follow targets if someone calls, use team chat if this isnt working to determine who should be the focus if called target isn't going down

3. If you are not healing bring a rez (preferably a sig)

4. remember that CA is random - never ragequit, you never know when you might see some combination of skills that are working together that will inspire you to create a better TA or Tombs or GvG build - free your mind from preconceived notions of what is needed for a team to win.

4b. Because CA is random, dont rush to alter your build because you lost. I recommend doing runs of at least 5 matches with a build before any changes are made.

4c. Understand that your end goal is not neccessarilty to rule in CA - what you are doing is field-testing a build. This is closely related to 4b, if, for exampl, you are looking at an anti-warrior build for a necro, dont change your build until you have actually faced a fair number of warriors (this may be more than 5 matches depending on what type of role you are trying to develop for the build, for example an anti-monk mesmer may take a bit longer to flesh out because of the scacity of monks in CA)

5. Don't point fingers when you lose, it might have been your fault.

6. Granted it can be VERY frustrating when team-mates aren't focusing fire or are allowing themselves to be kited all over the place, but yelling at them will not fix the problem. Present the information calmly and don't be pedantic about it either.

7. Remember this is a game - you are supposed to be having fun

Excellent posts Lorien and Draeco!!

1. Squishies ARE your number one target.
2. Just because a monk is tough does NOT mean you should give up and go fight something else. Two dedicated attackers is usually enough to take any monk down.
(on the flip side - watch the skills the monk is using- this will tell you if it would be better to attack one of his/her team mates instead of the monk him/herself)
3. If you have no Mo secondary and therefore cannot bring vengeance (or just don't have it), ALWAYS bring res sig! Competition Arena battles don't usually last long enough for rebirth, ressurect or restore life to have any meaning. Moreover, casting time!! OY!!

Most CA battles are lost because..
1. Someone gets discouraged with the main target, the second target.. the third and so on. They can't kill as fast as they'd like to they give up and go to something else.
2. Someone didn't bring Res sig.
3. As was already stated, a high damage War prefers another War instead of going for proper targets ~ squishies.

Perhaps the order of target preference should be;
1. Monk* **
2. Mesmer
3. Elementalist
4. Necro
5. Ranger
6. Warrior
* - Of course, in some situations you might put the monk a step or two down on the list. The lava map being one reason. (but not always) Best to err on the side of killing the monk first.
** - A protector/bonding monk is an excellent kill of you can get it. They will lose all of their enchantments on fellow players, they usually can't keep up with the healing costs to energy used and when they get resed they have to start ALL over with their life bonds and whatnot. Of all monks ~ THIS IS YOUR PRIMARY TARGET!!

And remember, you won't always win regardless of what you do, but if you can consistantly take out the monk ~ the rest of the team will usually follow.

Try playing a ranger. Observe what some of the guilds use in the replays and try a build form there. Most CA groups completly ignore the rangers - so u probably could spike 2 people to death before they start panicking and start attacking you.

My targeting, depending on situations

MO
ME
NEC

Never underestimate either the nec or the Mes. Those babies were born to pvp. U can get hit really hard by anti warrior mes / or even anti caster necs - u may want to go after them if the monk is running around from a warrior.

To run or not to run:

Warriors should bring something like bull strike and sprint - simply because the knock down + the crit from hitting an opponent will stop them from running.

Runners: If ur running from a ranger - get out of sight. Rangers need a line of sight in order to shoot you. Use steps, walls etc to get out of sight.

Spells that can be a problem:
Soul Leech, like backfire, dont cast thru it.
Wither + Malise : get ur energy to as low as possible and do a switch - switch out ur + energy weapon for something that has lesser. Malise would have disappeared.

Trappers:
If you see a trapper trapping an area, DONT GO TO THAT AREA. It always makes me laugh when i trap in visible sight and the warrior just runs thru the trap to get me. Blindness + cripple + bleeding = dead/ useless warrior

I went back in CA with a spike ranger (thanks to observer mode =D) I had a lot of fun and our team got 9 or 8 flawless win until we reach TA.

The thing that helped me was to calm down and take the time to see what was happening. PvPing for the first time is stressing but there's no need to.

Another thing i realised is that in 9 of 10 match i went, both team usually get face to face and stop before attacking. Its the best time to select closest target with C and go through them with TAB too see their proffessions. They are only 4 *not counting possible pet* so it should be fast enough and you can get an idea of what to expect. Although the "wait time" don't always happen but 4 target is fast to scan and can be done when running there.

I consider my self a newb too but thats the 2 main thing which is not listed here that helped me on my CA trip

Just want to comment that sometimes I find it better to split targets, especially if you have an interrupter on your team. For example, in TA I used to play an axe warr with my ranger friend (who likes to use incendiary arrows or distracting shot). On most games I would let him focus on the enemy healer while I attack the other caster or second monk. So we don't necessarily attack the same targets, and it worked quite well in TA.

Everyone should bring a rez sig in CA/TA if possible. Hard rez is just not useful in these kind of games.

im still pretty noob at pvp, and i had a question about class rolls on a team.
today i was in TA with a pickup group and we weren't half bad, but as a W/E i had this crazy idea that my role involved attacking the enemy. the healer on my team eventually quit because he said my job was to protect him and i was sucking at it.

now maybe im jsut noob, but im pretty sure that if i attacked the guys attacking him, that would leave the healer free to heal them and i would not kill them fast enough to save my healer anyway, so at the end of the day we would be out a healer and the other team would not.

so is it true that warriors should play defense, while other classes (we had an E/R and a R/A at the time i think) try to take out the enemy healer/deadly caster?

That healer should learn how to play the game. For someone who describes himself as "pretty noob at pvp", you seem to understand the game a whole lot better than he does.

shameless self-promotion and sorry to plug another forum here but I wrote a fairly extensive guide for new PvP players, you can read it at http://guildwars.ogaming.com/forum/i...howtopic=21411

Hmm...oh, I've got one.

If your health bar turns pink, or gets a little pink arrow on it, take a quick moment to stop and find out why. You'll find a hex symbol (it's also, surprise, pink) on your screen. Mouseover it and read what it does. If it says soemthing like "Every time you do action X, take Y damage" then don't do that until it ends. This will slow up your game play at first, but very soon you'll recognize the symbols and know if you need to respond to them.

Next tip. If you're on a team and your monk asks you to kill a spirit, go kill the spirit as a priority. There is a chance that the spirit may be hindering your monk's ability to keep everyone alive. Warriors and Rangers, this means you especially, don't expect the mesmer, necro, or monk to be able to take them down all that fast.

Last tip. If you're dying and there is a monk on your team, look around and run in their direction (or at least run in circles near him/her). Running away from your monk when you're in need of healing=bad, sad times soon to follow.

On the topic of spirits most of them are very situational, using pred season because it helps you self heal is nice but remember it can mess up other people o your team, same goes for things like energizing wind ask before you put it down whether it screws over a team mate. Same goes for things like natures renewal and frozen soil. Very powerful if used right but remember they affect you so using say NR when you have a prot monk and hex mesmer on your team is not a good idea.
